Sue Sutherlin prefers to paint in oils because of its flexibility. She paints what she sees and in very minute detail. Her favorite directive to her students is "LOVE YOUR LINER" (a liner is a very small brush). Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Sue grew up in a family of six children, all of whom loved to work with their hands. She has a sister who is an artist in New Orleans, but their work is the complete opposite. Her sister likes to paint flowers and landscapes and uses "BIG" brushes. Sue on the other hand, likes to paint swamp scenes and Louisiana wildlife. In her paintings, she captures every single drape of moss in the trees of her landscapes and the fine softness of the fur or feathers of her swamp wildlife. Sue attended college for one year at USL majoring in art. She has two sons and a daughter. Although busy raising a family, she found time to write two cookbooks. Sue is a great cook! Being a hunter, the first was a cookbook for wives of hunters so that they didn't ruin the ducks their husbands brought home. The second book is a cooking handbook for college kitchen illiterates. It has proven to be a great high school graduation present. It started with her own children along with nieces and nephews calling from college saying, "OK, I have a chicken breast, now what do I do?" Sue moved to Covington, Louisiana, over twenty years ago and has been very active in Covington's large art community. Many of her paintings were sold over the years through Rumors II on Royal Street in New Orleans. Today you can find her paintings at many area restaurants and businesses. For a number of years, Sue has been giving art lessons. She teacher pen and ink, charcoal, pastels, and oil. Her lessons emphasize painting what you see, how to create depth, and how to add detail. She also does faux paintings on floors and walls for businesses and residences. And if this doesn't keep her busy enough, she also accepts commissions to do pen and ink of homes or animals to be used for her customers' personal stationery. |
